Jussie Smollett is a Headline, but His Story Plays Out Over and Over Again Every day

Reading Time: 4 minutes Maybe the troglodytes who beat up Smollett believe the idea implicit in the MAGA slogan—that there was a time when all was well with the world, or at least, close to it. When, to quote “Those Were The Days,” the theme song from All in the Family, “girls were girls and men were men.” If so, Smollett is definitely anathema: an articulate, openly gay man of mixed Jewish and African-American heritage. Once and for all, guys, the genie is out of the bottle (and I do mean, out). It’s too late to turn back the clock. The Supreme Court just upheld the ban on transgender people serving in the military, however, my daughter’s generation is more comfortable with gender-fluidity than mine.

They are the future.

Think Progress: The Supreme Court may kill Roe v. Wade as soon as this week

Reading Time: 3 minutes Lawyers representing a Louisiana abortion clinic and at least two physicians filed an application in the Supreme Court on Monday asking the court to halt a Louisiana law that is identical to a Texas law the justices struck down in 2016.

The court is almost certain to deny this application in a 5-4 vote — possibly as soon as tonight. When it does so, it will effectively mark the end of Roe v. Wade.

The Root: Sen. Kamala Harris Is a 54-Year-Old Black Woman, and Yes, She Dated Willie Brown. So What?

Reading Time: 5 minutes In the end, I believe I will cut and paste this next series of sentences half a dozen times over the next 18 months. There are plenty of issues to criticize Kamala Harris about. Her attorney general office’s support of prison labor to fight California wildfires, her refusal to back independent investigations in police shootings, her relatively timid attempts to fix prison overcrowding, her failure to properly cite Tribe Called Quest lyrics. There is a lot in her past worth digging into and evaluating. However, Kamala Harris’ dating life, is not one of those issues.

The Root: From Most Hated to American Hero: The Whitewashing of Martin Luther King Jr.

Reading Time: 6 minutes When anyone tries to tell you what Martin Luther King Jr. would have wanted, remind them that we likely could have known his true feelings if a white man hadn’t put a bullet in his brain.

White people do not love Martin Luther King Jr.

And by “white people,” I do not mean it as a blanket statement. I mean it as a historical, statistics-supported fact. I mean it to describe the majority of white people who did not support the abolition of slavery, the civil rights struggle, the Black Power movement, Black Lives Matter, or any other American movement for justice and equality.
