Wall Street to Trump: No trade wars. And lay off Amazon
Wall Street is sending President Trump a message: Don’t start a trade war. And lay off Amazon, one of the most important companies in America.
Investors are still struggling to get used to Trump’s unconventional style, which creates a great deal of uncertainty for markets.
“In the past, presidents have taken issues with certain sectors through more formal channels, as opposed to off-the-cuff on Twitter,” Browne said.
About $36 billion of Amazon’s market value vanished on Monday alone. Those losses are felt widely because Amazon’s enormous success has made it one of the most popular stocks in the world. In fact, Amazon has been a big driver of the stock market rally.
“For the President to criticize a company the way he has with Amazon, which is clearly the result of a personal grudge with the CEO, runs counter to the concept of a ‘free’ market,” Ian Winer, head of equities at Wedbush Securities, said in an email.
This is yet another example of Trump’s incoherent stance toward Russia.
Meetings with a US president are a major honor for any world leader, even one as powerful in his home country as Putin. Trump was offering the Russian strongman a reward at the same time the US was working with other countries to punish Russia for the nerve agent attack on a former Soviet spy. And while it’s not odd for US presidents and Russian leaders to meet, dangling a potential face-to-face meeting at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue could make Putin conclude that he has little to fear from the US and its allies for the attack.
The potential meeting comes against the backdrop of an attack that was audacious, even for Putin. On March 4, Sergei Skripal, a former Soviet and Russian spy, was found unconscious on a bench next to his daughter Yulia in the English city of Salisbury. Ten days later, the UK announced that it was kicking 23 Russian diplomats out of the country because London blamed Moscow for the attack. (Moscow denies any involvement in the strike, unsurprisingly and unpersuasively.)
Anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela’s ex-wife Winnie Mandela dies
Uncompromising opponent of racial-segregation system maintained ties with Nelson Mandela despite their divorce in 1996.
Winnie Mandela, the ex-wife of the late South African anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, has died at the age of 81.
A veteran herself of the anti-apartheid struggle, Winnie Mandela died on Monday afternoon, her personal assistant said.
“She died after a long illness, for which she had been in and out of the hospital since the start of the year,” Victor Dlamini, a family spokesperson, said in a statement on Monday.
