Astrology: New Moon in Virgo
By: Janette Dalgliesh – Confluence Daily is your daily news source for women in the know.
Stand by for action (but not quite yet… )!
Ruled by Mercury, Virgo is usually associated with alphabetising CD collections and having efficient systems set up to manage everyday life. Not every Virgoan does this, but plenty are known for having that super edge when it comes to creating order out of chaos.
And that theme – order out of chaos – is what makes Virgo a powerful sign for manifesting something out of nothing.
Quantum physics teaches us that at the subatomic level, reality is infinitely uncertain.
We cannot know the position of an electron, or the state of health of Schrœdinger’s theoretical cat, until it has been observed.
Once it’s been observed, those infinite possibilities ‘collapse’ into measured reality and we say ‘THIS is what is’.
Virgo always makes me think of this dynamic.
By taking chaos (unlimited possibility) and bringing it to order (determining reality), the intangible, the not-yet-real, is made tangible and real.
A concept becomes a sentence, acquiring the structure of language. The sentence becomes a plan, acquiring the linear structure of ‘how to’. The plan gets implemented through actions, acquiring the structure of here-and-now physical tangible results.
You can clearly see the Mercury influence at play.
Mercury might be the Trickster, but he’s also the messenger of the gods, which puts him in charge of communications, boundaries, systems, networks – in charge of that which has structure and form.
But wait…. there’s more!
At the time of this particular Virgo New Moon, ALL the inner personal planets will be in Virgo:
- Sun (identity)
- Moon (emotions)
- Mercury (how you think)
- Venus (desires and relationships)
- Mars (actions)
That is some super solid support for Getting Shit Done!
To top it all off, this is happening in a supportive relationship to god-of-sudden-change Uranus, whose power to shake loose old, outmoded ways of being-and-doing is second to none.
AND…. it’s Dark Moon first, so if you’re reading this before the New Moon, pause for a moment (I did say ‘not yet‘ at the start of this article).
Before every New Moon comes the Dark Moon, a period of 1.5 to 3.5 days which represents the pause before the action. Not to be confused with Black Moon (several definitions exist) or Black Moon Lilith (a mathematical point in the sky relating to the Moon’s elliptical orbit around the Earth), the timing of a Dark Moon depends on how you view the timing of New Moon.
Some see New Moon as the moment the crescent moon becomes visible again – but many modern astrologers (me included) take the New Moon as the moment sun and moon are exactly conjunct, which means the moon is invisible from Earth at that time. The exact times below are drawn from this perspective – if you’re more into the older system, shift everything to about 24 hours later.
This Dark Moon is mostly happening in Leo, which means it’s an ideal time to use the energy of fire to release that which no longer serves you, especially in relation to systems and structures.
In short – spend the next couple of days immersed in self-love and a review of old habits to do with identity, your emotional wellbeing, your relationships, your thoughts. Activate loads of self-compassion, and allow whatever time you can for resting and reflecting.
And then let all those planets in Virgo and Uranus in Taurus lend muscle to your metaphorical arm, so you can create plans and begin implementing them.
For example, I will be ‘burning down’ some old systems and habits to do with how I manage my calendar, and also some old habits in the relationship with my body.
I have some ideas on what I want to replace the old – a new internal system which I’m excited about, and a new approach to movement – but I’m not acting on those until I’ve taken steps to (internally) burn away the old.
Can you see what a fabulous combination this is?
And – for those who’ve been keeping an eye on the Saturn-Pluto convergence in Capricorn – can you see how this is a perfect support for the long-term work of building solid foundations for what you want to create over the next 16 months?
It couldn’t be better set up if it tried with both hands for a week!
The only question now is, how can you make the most of it without falling into unhelpful workaholism, obsessive how-to, or toxic overwhelm? By recognising your own capacity, and by bringing a whole lot of self-compassion into the mix.
Here are some ideas on how to make the most of this brilliant make-it-real energy combo:
- find ways to metaphorically or literally burn away the old during the Leo Dark Moon (eg write a letter to an old habit and burn it during the Dark Moon; imagine fire sweeping through your mind or body in controlled ways, to find and release old habits of thought or behaviour; be prepared to ditch internal rules or standards that make your daily routines unsustainable)
- postpone any serious planning work during the Leo Dark Moon, and instead pursue something creative to share with the world that’s aligned with what you want to make next in life (eg write a poem or make art to explore what the new thing you’re building will FEEL like, then share without comment or explanation)
- implement self-compassion and rest during the Dark Moon, to whatever extent you can, and resolve to bring the self-compassion along with you into the Virgo New Moon planning-and-action phase
- set intentions for delightful surprises in your everyday life (Uranus always brings surprises, so why not choose to make them delightful?- hat tip to Kim Falconer for this phrase!)
- at the time of New Moon, or as soon afterwards as possible, explore how you think your life will look AFTER you have built that thing you’re building – and then find ways to implement that in everyday life, starting right now. Focus especially on things like health, daily work routines and ritual magic, or refer to your sign or rising sign below (eg sign up or activate that gym membership and schedule it in your diary; streamline something in your business that needs to be smoother and easier; plan one small change to a system at home and then spend a couple of months embedding and implementing it)
By the signs
Aries / Aries Rising
All aspects of ordinary everyday life are for review here – health and hygiene habits, food habits, commuting and work habits, the works. The keys are a) bring zero judgement to the process and b) aim for easy and sustainable, not all-out-fix-my-life-right-now. Start with just one thing that will give you the most bang for your buck (hydration or sleep or bartered baby-sitting) and go from there.
Taurus / Taurus Rising
Time to get creative and SHARE it. Make art, create a meal, design a garden, write a song, then share it with the collective – whether that’s a group of close friends or the whole world via Instagram. Make a plan to let the creative spark rise up and help you to radiate your truest self to the world, not just once but on the regular.
Gemini / Gemini Rising
Your home is the focus here – the systems and structures which support your relationship with your home. But there’s a twist. This is not about making it look like BHG or Martha Stewart, or having it be Pinterest-ready 24/7. This is about aligning your home to who you are becoming. Remember that thing you’re building? Imagine you’re already that girl – how does SHE live her juicy, messy, human life? Plan for that.
Cancer / Cancer Rising
This is about communication, all the way. Tap in to new ways to write, teach and talk; but also new ways to read, learn and listen. If you’ve always dreamt of running That Course, now’s the time to let the dream inspire the planning and the action to make it real. If you’ve always wanted to publish that short story or poem or anthology of your work, it’s time to dig it out, polish it to a shine, and publish.
Leo / Leo Rising
Show me the money! Systems to do with your own money include both the external (your bank accounts, how you transfer funds, automatic payments etc) and the internal (habitual thoughts about money, habits of behaviour about money). It’s time for a review. If it’s clunky or clumsy or unwieldy, time to streamline. If it’s toxic or unhealthy or fear-based, time to ditch it and practice a better one.
Virgo / Virgo Rising
What parts of how you show up in the world could use an overhaul? Consider changing to an easier hairstyle, ditching obsessive ironing, streamlining an over-complicated website. Stop explaining yourself to people who haven’t earned the right to know, and look at where your boundaries might be stronger and more solid.
Libra / Libra Rising
Practise the art of allowing better dreams. That could mean literally revising your bedtime habits to encourage better sleep; or it could mean streamlining your relationship with meditation and magic to make them more accessible and more sustainable. In this case, ‘make it real’ actually means ‘do practical things to make space for dreaming’, because inspiration often begins as a dream.
Scorpio / Scorpio Rising
How might you make your social life and your connections feel more supportive? One way is by building in some structure – set up a regular catch up with your besties, design a schedule for a regular newsletter that lights you up, reduce the complexity of any systems you currently use to connect with people. Does it light you up? That’s a good question to start with. What would light me up more? That’s a better question.
Sagittarius / Sagittarius Rising
Examine your work systems and structures. Get ruthless with ditching systems that aren’t streamlined and efficient and pulling their weight. Unsubscribe from anything that’s not actively useful to you right now – paid or unpaid, professional or personal. Simplify all the way. This is simple logic – if you hate doing it, or interacting with it, chances are you’ll struggle to do it (whatever ‘it’ is).
Capricorn / Capricorn Rising
Explore beyond the known. Are there new structures or systems out there you haven’t even heard of yet? They don’t have to be complicated or expensive – in fact, by going beyond your regular stamping ground, you might find new ways to adapt and use systems, or create new ones that nobody else has thought of. Be willing to break with jaded old ideas in any area where you can spot a system – how you brush your teeth through to how you change the world.
Aquarius / Aquarius Rising
Check-in with your shared resources, and look for ways to simplify systems so they’re more robust. This might be a good time to re-examine the existing setup for handling shared money, bills, household costs, etc. I’m willing to bet you can find some better deals that will save money AND be less hassle to manage. And make sure you have a good system in place to tackle your taxes!
Pisces / Pisces Rising
Look to your significant one-to-one relationships. Are there structures in place to support good communication and the flow of love back and forth? Are your daily habits of connection robust and solid? Maybe this is the time to implement some new habits – no phones at the dinner table, no TV in the bedroom, etc. Ask ‘does this support my relationship’ and if the answer is ‘meh….’ then reconsider.
