Senate Republicans have a math problem on Trump’s border emergency

At the moment, the momentum is moving against Trump and Senate Republican leaders — raising the possibility that the President could be forced to issue the first veto of his tenure on what is widely seen as his biggest campaign promise, an embarrassing moment to say the least. The latest crack in Republican support for Trump’s wall — or, at least, his decision to use his national emergency powers to funnel previously allocated funds to build the border barrier — came Monday, when North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis (R) announced that he would vote for the disapproval resolution. Here’s a bit of what he wrote in a Washington Post op-ed announcing the decision:
“As a U.S. senator, I cannot justify providing the executive with more ways to bypass Congress. As a conservative, I cannot endorse a precedent that I know future left-wing presidents will exploit to advance radical policies that will erode economic and individual freedoms. These are the reasons I would vote in favor of the resolution disapproving of the president’s national-emergency declaration, if and when it comes before the Senate.”

A scientist on the myth of ugly produce and food waste

The startups Misfits Market and Imperfect Produce say they’re rescuing food that would otherwise be wasted. Sarah Taber is calling bullshit.

One prominent skeptic of the ugly produce industry is Sarah Taber, a crop scientist who worked on farms for a decade, doing everything from detasseling corn to beekeeping. She now consults for several greenhouse and indoor agricultural companies and hosts the podcast Farm To Taber.

A few weeks after I interviewed Ramesh of Misfits Market, I saw an impassioned Twitter thread from Taber responding to recent stories about ugly produce startups, and called her up to hear more of her perspective. Read on to learn why Taber believes sustainable ugly produce is a myth, why she wants to change the popular narrative that Americans need to save farmers, and how she believes the food supply chain can become less wasteful. This interview has been edited and condensed.

Michael Cohen To Accuse Trump Of Criminal Activity: Reports

Once Trump’s right-hand man, Cohen has distanced himself from the president since pleading guilty to federal prosecutors last year.

In congressional testimony on Wednesday, President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney and longtime “fixer” Michael Cohen will accuse Trump of engaging in criminal activity in the months before the 2016 election, multiple news outlets reported Tuesday.

Once Trump’s right-hand man, Cohen has distanced himself from the president since pleading guilty to federal prosecutors last year for using campaign money to silence Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal, two women who said Trump had extramarital affairs with them.

Cohen, a key figure in the investigations into Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, has claimed he made the payments at Trump’s direction.
