Read John McCain’s final letter to America

It seems to include a parting shot at Trump.

In his final letter to America — which was read aloud by former campaign manager Rick Davis on Monday — Republican Sen. John McCain, who died Saturday at age 81, took subtle aim at President Trump while emphasizing a long-held approach to setting aside partisan divides.

McCain’s letter urged Americans to come together behind shared ideals. “Fellow Americans, that association has meant more to me than any other,” McCain writes. “I lived and died a proud American. We are citizens of the world’s greatest republic, a nation of ideals, not blood and soil.”

This Toddler Got Sick in ICE Detention. Six weeks later she was Dead.

Yazmin and Mariee were apprehended on the U.S. side of the river by Customs and Border Protection. They were then transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, which sent them to the Dilley facility, the largest of three family detention centers for undocumented migrants in the country, with a capacity of 2,400.

One week after arriving at Dilley, Mariee developed a cough, congestion, and a fever of over 104 degrees. During the next two weeks of her confinement, Yazmin felt powerless as her daughter got sicker, rebounded, and got sick again, battling a virus that started with a common cold.

Six weeks after being released from the facility, relocated to New Jersey, and shuffled between three hospitals, Mariee was finally unhooked from a ventilator and died at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The cause of death, ultimately, was viral pneumonitis, according to hospital records.

The despicable politicization of Mollie Tibbetts’ murder

The murder of University of Iowa sophomore Mollie Tibbetts by an immigrant farm worker was abominable and tragic. But it is absolutely shameful that President Trump and other restrictionists have seized on this incident to justify the collective punishment and demonization of all unauthorized immigrants.

Using horrific incidents to push preferred policies has become a depressing political ritual in this country. Trump, of course, is among our most egregious offenders. He routinely draws attention to the families of Americans killed by illegal immigrants.
