We Lower Ourselves to Trump’s Level When We Get Distracted by His Hubris

President Donald Trump said Monday he would have rushed into the Florida high school to stop the gunman perpetrating the nation’s latest mass shooting “even if I didn’t have a weapon” as he admonished the inaction of a sheriff’s deputy assigned to the school.
“You don’t know until you test it, but I think, I really believe I’d run in there, even if I didn’t have a weapon, and I think most of the people in this room would have done that too,” Trump told a gathering of US governors at the White House.
It’s ridiculous and everyone who hears it knows it. It seems highly unlikely, if not an outright fantasy to think that draft dodging Donald Trump would run into a building to save anyone – armed or not armed. The question about Trump has always been whether or not he believes his bullshit or are these well-timed nuggets of distraction crafted for the media, delivered by a madman or his goons, and then fed to the public intentionally.
And the answer to that question is irrelevant because why he does it, although worth questioning, won’t provide any answers as to how to stop it. We know this playbook all too well. It’s what Trump does and it’s our job not to follow him there.
Every time Donald Trump feeds us the poison of his own hubris he lowers the level conversation and the debate to that of an angry fifth grade bully on a playground. We are dealing with complex issues and challenges. We aren’t going to find answers at that level, and I suspect our President knows that. He controls the narrative with the absurd and we allow him to do that.
The way to win anything is play your own game and yet we keep playing Trumps. We don’t play to our own strengths because we continue to get lost is his insanity. We keep getting burned by his hubris. We cannot continue to get lost in the dialog of a schoolyard bully. We have to elevate the narrative to a level where solutions exist and we can’t that if we keep falling for his bait.
No. Donald J. Trump would not have run into a building to save anyone from a gunman.
That’s not news.
Let’s start talking about the real issues of responsible gun ownership and the plague of mass shootings.
We may very well have to have that conversation without our President.
